Coachella Wastewater Treatment Plant

Project Overview

Michael Wall Engineering provided electrical construction documents for the $21.5M expansion of an existing municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) located in Coachella, California.  This expansion required the design of a new 4000A 480V electric service entrance in order to support the capacity for a new total of 10 million gallons of water. This service, and the downstream switchgear, was designed to accommodate an eventual 12kV service entrance upgrade.  The plant expansion featured a new headworks, effluent aeration ponds, and multiple chlorination basins. The design featured over 100 motors, requiring the construction of a central dedicated electrical motor control building to house the (3) MCCs and several very large VFDs. A comprehensive control and automation system was designed to allow the entire plant to operate with a staff of only (4) employees. The entire plant is supported by a 1000kW emergency generator that ensures continuous operation. Close coordination with the City of Coachella was provided ensuring that the plant remained fully operational during the expansion, which was completed in 2008.
