The College of Business Administration, Markstein Hall is a high-tech educational facility designed to tap into San Diego Gas & Electric’s Savings By Design program. The modern-design $23 million, 78,000SF building and plaza feature a 120-seat lecture auditorium and classrooms with state-of-the-art PC/audiovisual/projection systems and wireless high-speed internet access at each desk. To help control illumination levels and costs, classrooms have multi-switched, multi-level lighting fixtures instead of dimming systems. Throughout Markstein Hall, compact fluorescent, linear fluorescent, metal halide and other fixtures provide direct and indirect lighting. The overall lighting power density averages 1.02 watts per square foot, which is 13% better than allowed under Title 24. Because lighting and mechanical systems are tied into the campus-wide energy management system, they can be controlled remotely. The facilities are designed to achieve 35.6% better performance than required under the 2001 Title 24 standards, for estimated annual savings of 520,480 kilowatt-hours, or approximately $78,000 per year at current energy prices. Overall, the project qualified for almost $125,000 in total incentives; a building owner incentive of $93,686 and a design team incentive of $31,229 through the Savings By Design program.
