The U.S. Grant Hotel, located in the heart of downtown San Diego, was built in 1910 and is listed by the National Registrar of Historic Sites. The building houses 317 guest rooms throughout 11-stories and 400,000SF. Michael Wall Engineering, Inc. (MWE) provided electrical engineering for this multi-phase $52 million renovation, which included complete interior replacement of guest rooms, renovation of public spaces including the main lobby, back-of-house, meeting rooms, technology business center, retail space and restaurants (The Grant Grill and The Garden Room).
The scope of work included electrical engineering for power and lighting systems as well as lighting consulting services for fixture selection. Renovations and additions included adding new lighting and power throughout, as well as relocating existing electrical and signal devices, adding a new dimming control rack, time clock, and feeders from the main electrical room. Branch circuitry revisions throughout multiple floors for guest rooms, elevator lobbies, and equipment rooms was performed. New egress lighting design and calculations for corridors was needed, and MWE coordinated with Michael Riotto Design for other designer lighting fixture selection and placement.
